Maraton de Santiago

What is a Marathon?

The marathon is a long-distance race with an official distance of 42.195 kilometres (approximately 26 miles 385 yards), usually run as a road race. The event was instituted in commemoration of the fabled run of the Greek soldier Pheidippides, a messenger from the Battle of Marathon to Athens, who reported the victory. The marathon can be completed by running or with a run/walk strategy. There are also wheelchair divisions.

The marathon was one of the original modern Olympic events in 1896, though the distance did not become standardized until 1921. More than 800 marathons are held throughout the world each year, with the vast majority of competitors being recreational athletes, as larger marathons can have tens of thousands of participants.

About:

Maraton de Santiago - MDS

The Santiago Marathon (also called Gatorade Santiago Marathon for sponsorship concepts, or for its acronym MDS) is a sporting event held on the streets of the city of Santiago de Chile, where amateur and professional runners compete in the categories of 10K, 21K and 42K (marathon).

It has been held every year since 1990, replacing in 2007 the name of the competition, which was previously called the Santiago International Marathon.

Today it is considered the largest annual sporting event in Chile, obtaining in 2012 the IAAF certification and integrating it into the Bronze Label Road Races category and calendar,  and with this the official recognition in the half marathon categories (21,098 meters) and marathon (42,195 meters). In South America its importance is such that it is only surpassed by the Bogota Half Marathon, in Colombia, which is recognized within the IAAF Gold Label Road Races calendar.
